Founder of the Society

Prof. R. Mishra

Ramdev Misra (1908-1998) did his Ph.D. (1937) under Professor W.H. Pearsall at Leeds University, UK. After returning to India, he established a renowned school of ecology at Banaras Hindu University (B.H.U.) and served as head (1955-1971) of the Department of Botany, B.H.U.He designed the first postgraduate course in ecology in India. More than 50 scholars received PhDs under his supervision and went on to found other universities and research institutions across the country to introduce ecological teaching and research. Ecological research by Prof. Misra laid the foundation for understanding tropical communities and their succession, the environmental response of plant populations, and productivity and nutrient cycling in tropical forest and grassland ecosystems. He established the International Society for Tropical Ecology (ISTE) in 1956.He was awarded fellowships from the Indian National Science Academy and the World Academy of Arts and Sciences and the prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Award in Environment and Ecology. Due to his efforts, the Government of India established the National Committee for Environmental Planning and Coordination (1972), which in later years paved the way for the establishment of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (1984). It is now renamed as the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.Professor Misra is widely revered as the Father of Ecology in India for his pioneering ecological research and education in the country.
